The Realm of Things

Kim Laybourn
  • Closed

How we understand and read nature is central to Kim Laybourn's work as an artist. It is about challenging the dichotomous distinctions that have allowed themselves to be constructed and reinforced through scientific, economic and cultural agencies, perhaps primarily in the spirit of the Occidental modernist-enlightenment.

The Realm of Things is a direct continuation of Laybourn's former project, The Animate Landscape, but the focus has shifted from the world of plants to that of minerals. Through film, sculpture and installation, the audience encounters a series of rocks, fossils and stone artifacts, that come to challenge the separations of life and death, people and landscape. How does our idea of what is alive affect our attribution of value? With artistic means, Laybourn invites the audience into a new and more fantastic understanding of the world, where humans are decentralized in favor of a more elevated form of coexistence with the surroundings.
