Oaken Bodies

Janicke Schønning
  • Closed

Janicke Schønning's work can be described as experimental open-air painting. In Sørkedalen, where she lives, she has her open-air studio where she paints in the forest throughout all seasons. The weather is present and characterizes the paintings with traces of frost, rain and natural processes such as soil erosion and weathering. A great degree of improvisation and empathy with the surroundings characterizes the drawings and paintings, which are her subjective interpretations of what she sees and experiences in nature.

Several study visits to the Berge landscape conservation area in Tørvikbygd, Hardanger, were crucial for the works in this exhibition. The place is known for its old, hollow oak trees. It is said that oak trees live for 500 years, and die for 500 years.
