LIFE IS LIKE A BALLOON
Afrang Nordlöf Malekian, Sepideh KhodarahmiThe performance and installation Life Is Like a Balloon explores mehmani as a moment when ambition, migration, and inherited expectations can burst.
For many Iranians, success has traditionally been measured by achieving the status of one of three professions: doctor, engineer or lawyer. Anything else is a disappointment. For migrants, the pressure may grow even stronger: you have to prove that moving abroad was the right choice. Eventually, the same expectation is passed on to the next generation. It seems, however, that Iranians throw mehmani, Iranian home parties, to momentarily deflate accumulated expectations by becoming a dalghak: a clown, jester or trickster. The respectable adult warms up the party, surrendering to their inner fool by mimicking a motori in tight jeans or by picking imaginary flowers in paradise.
